RECIPE

INGREDIENTS

Per cocktail

• Ice

• 3 ounces (1 part) Aperol

• 3 ounces (1 part) dry Prosecco

• 1 ounce (a splash) club soda or unflavored sparkling water

• Orange slice, for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS

1 Add ice to a wine glass (however much you'd like). Pour in the Aperol (also as much as you'd like - the recipe calls for 3 ounces but I like mine with a little more).

2 Pour in an equal amount of Prosecco. Top your drink off with a splash of club soda and add a

slice of orange. Enjoy

Cultural Context

The world’s 9th best-selling cocktail (as of 2019), the Aperol Spritz traces its origins to the 1800s, when Austrian soldiers in the Venetian region of Italy found Italian wine to be too strong, so they asked if their drinks could be watered down - they asked for such in the Germanic spritzen, meaning to spray with water. Thus, the “Sprtiz” was born.

It wasn’t until the 1930s that bitters were added to the cocktail, and it wasn’t until the 1970s that wine was replaced with Procesecco.

The cocktail itself has mostly been known as an apéritif - an alcoholic beverage meant to be consumed not with food, but before or after it. Traditionally dry rather than sweet, apéritifs are meant to whet the appetite and are often found served with hors d'oeuvres.
